About this place

Pisco Montano is the cut in the limestone cliff at the foot of Monte Sant’Angelo, along the coast of Terracina. This Roman-era engineering project enabled the Via Appia to pass close to the sea, avoiding the ascent required by the older route.

The cliff face retains the monumental character of this feat of engineering and helps to illustrate the relationship between the road, the rock face and the harbour. It is a sight to be viewed from the designated pedestrian areas, without standing on the carriageway of the road that runs alongside it.
